This book is born out of her phenomenal outpouring on female empowerment and relationships. Mafietta follows the dramatic up and down relationships of Clarke, the story’s protagonist. Brilliantly entertaining and engaging the tale focuses on Clarke, now ready for love; entertaining a man she normally wouldn't consider, Errol, a man from the underworld.
As one of the Bellow Brothers, a reputed crime family, Errol runs a popular hot spot the Marley Grille, which poses as a front for a major crime syndicate. Mafietta follows the meteoric rise and fall of their love story that ultimately pushes Clarke to run the family business after a tragic turn of events that sends Errol behind bars. When a good girl turns mafia queen, Clarke is forced to choose between the love of her life and the new life growing inside of her. A non-stop action thriller, the book is a cacophony of action that expresses the deep passion and unique skill that E.W. Brooks possesses. Mafietta: A House Divided is the second installment of this dynamic series to be released next year as a follow-up to this unique freshman novel release.
I'm a simple country girl turned big sister and Army Wife who loves to help others. I spend a lot of time volunteering with my sorority and the Family Readiness Group on post. There is nothing like the feeling you feel when someone finally gets it!! I am just honored and humbled that I can sometimes be used as the tool that brings enlightenment.
What do you want the reader to learn about the characters?
I wanted the readers to learn the struggle of the characters in Mafietta. It is always easy to judge others without understanding their situation and circumstances. I wanted to shed a bit of light on a life style that many frown upon, but may not fully understand.
What is the most important message you want the reader to learn?
I would love for the readers to look at these characters and take a self-inventory of sorts. Many times, we change who we are and become someone we don’t even recognize for the sake of a relationship. This could be good or bad, but either way, I wanted readers to use these characters to examine their own lives.
How will the reader be changed or moved from reading your work?
I hope Mafietta will shed light on the urban situation. Many are not aware of their potential or the educational opportunities that exist for them to create a better life and in-turn fall into a trap. My goal in writing this novel, was to help the reader understand that there is always an alternative, but – it is up to us to find it. Although it may be hard to admit given her current career choice, Mafietta is an example of a driven women, in her own way.
What came first the characters or the idea?
The idea definitely came first. Then it was up to me to create characters that were consistent with it.
What made you pursue a writing a career?
I’ve always been a writer. My grandmother communicated with me in letters as long as I can remember and it ultimately helped me to express myself through writing. Then, after living a bit of life, it was important to me to share the struggle of the single woman and community, so writing a novel seemed to be the natural next step.
How often do you write?
I write daily. Whether it is keeping a journal, working on my upcoming blog site, E.W. Brooks, communicating with fans on my Facebook/Twitter pages or my next project. I have to get it out.
When you're not writing, what do you like to do?
I love to bake and spend time with my family.
What are some of your favorite authors and books?
My favorite book is East of Eden by John Steinbeck because it explains that you may overcome evil. I also enjoy anything written by Maya Angelou particularly, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It teaches us that we can overcome any obstacle.
What inspires you to write?
Life and its circumstances. Sometimes we as people may know something in our hearts, but it takes reading or hearing something to confirm the thought. I hope to be that tiny whisper that pushes someone to make the right decision.
Gaining feedback on the Mafietta.com site, Facebook and Amazon reviews keeps me charged and motivates me to continue. Look out for part two coming in May of next year.
About the author: E.W. Brooks
E.W. Brooks is novelist of the highest caliber. An Army wife and mentor, her up-bringing in rural North Carolina fostered her curiosity for life in the big city. She always kept abreast of current events via the nightly news and local newspapers; this only fed her deep interest of those who made an effort to get ahead on the wrong side of the law. Her infatuation with this subject matter led to the creation of Mafietta. This first rate novel was born out of a hope to shine light on the types of men that peak the feminine appetite. E.W. Brooks’ exploration into the essence of womanhood also reveals how women define themselves through their journey of love and self-discovery.
E.W. Brook’s greatest joy comes from the smiling faces of those she’s helped to find a bit of light along their journey. She and her husband await the arrival of their first child this year.
